This article argues that France showed a higher profile in handling the Austrian question during the last years before the Anschluß than has been previously described by various scholars. Cooperation with Italy on Central European issues, however, ran into deadlock well before the Abyssinian affair and the election victory by the Popular Front occurred. With Austria adopting a 'German way' through its agreement with Germany in July 1936, French projects aiming at a neutralization of Austria definitely lost ground. France then followed the British appeasement policy with the idea that Germany, in exchange for recognition of territorial status quo, should have the option of making Austria its satellite. As this proved to be an unrealistic concept, those responsible in France became increasingly aware of the complete failure of French policy in Central Europe.
