Serbian Democracy and Russia, 1990-2023
Slobodan G. Markovich, per Zoom
Abstract:In this lecture Serbia’s path from an authoritarian state under Slobodan Milosevic (1989-2000), then an unconsolidated democracy after 2000, to the current situation of a hybrid state since the mid 2010s will be discussed. Political influence of Russia and its increasingly autocratic model will also be covered, especially in the period since 2005. Unresolved issues of Serbia with Kosovo have enabled Russia to become an actor not only in Serbia, but also in the Western Balkans. A wider region will also be covered and the emergence of a particular polity called stabilitocracy will be analysed. Problems of the deterioration of democracy will also be analysed within the context of the third wave of autocratisation and how this wave has affected the region of the Western Balkans.
